For a non-owner, the Spring Rally is a great opportunity to get on the water, and to do that early in the season. Having a specific date makes it so much easier to focus, and differs from those ‘Yes, I will crew for you’ discussions that so often unintentionally fade into history.
With the weekend starting on the Friday, two charter boats spent the evening at Hamble Point Marina, with a further ‘homer’ further up the river at the Royal Yacht club. Our Vice commadore invited us to his club for a drink that Friday evening, which afforded us the chance to appreciate the quaint Hamble village and also the magnificent club facilities.
Saturday morning saw the start of the Hamble mob’s Three Boat Race to Osbourne Bay.This was to be a gentlemanly trip, as the winds were much more suited to the crews of the Power Boat racers taking part in their round the island race. Light winds are a keen test for separating out the better sailors, so honor was at stake. Excitement was to be had from avoiding the stupidly fast (and loud) power boats that were (unbelievably) crossing our course. Happily power gives way to sail.
Lunch in Osborne Bay for Red Robin, Mischief and Carina was anything but leisurely for three of the over-achievers amongst us who took an early afternoon dip. All are to be congratulated for their example.
The afternoon passed without too much excitement, leaving us to apply sunscreen as needed, and it was. The club boats rallied at the East Cowes marina, with 7 boats mooring up, and crews eager to splice the mainbrace on the commadore’s boat. It was a convivial start to the evening.
Dinner at The Life Boat Pub and Restaurant. Informal seating arrangements allowed for new companionships to be formed with a musical chairs type approach to the evening.
Sunday morning, the early risers caught a fair wind, whilst the later risers were more dependent on their motors for their journeys home. All in all the weekend was a lovely experience, with sailing skill improved and friendship bonds enhanced.
