Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy FRS (5 July 1805 – 30 April 1865) was an English Royal Navy officer, politician, and scientist who served as New Zealand's second governor from 1843 to 1845.

He gained lasting renown as the captain of HMS Beagle during its notable survey expedition to Tierra del Fuego and the Southern Cone, a journey that took Charles Darwin around the globe.

FitzRoy was a trailblazing meteorologist who developed precise daily weather predictions, which he termed "forecasts," a term he coined. In 1854, he founded what would become the Met Office and devised systems to provide weather information to sailors and fishermen for their safety.
